Pro Bono Work

Did you know that Pennsylvania has several resources that offer pro bono work?  For those who do not know, attorneys may take on cases “pro bono” and offer their legal services to those who cannot afford them for free. The Pennsylvania Bar Association (“PBA”) has a specific department whose only focus is on pro bono work.

How does it work?

Every year, the PBA Pro Bono Office helps thousands of people who are in need of legal help but may not have the funds to afford a lawyer.  To be clear, Workers’ Compensation attorneys work on a contingent fee basis. That means that you pay nothing – no hourly fees, litigation costs, expert fees – nothing. Rather, we are compensated by a percentage of what we win on your behalf.  Unfortunately, not all areas of the law operate this way and paying a lawyer can be costly.  If you have a legal matter with limited financial means to pay for a lawyer, you can visit the PBA website and complete a PBA Pro Bono Program Legal Assistance Request Form.

We are so proud here at Stern & Cohen to represent the hard-working citizens of Pennsylvania that we try to give back to the community as much as possible by participating in these pro bono programs and offer our legal services for free to those in need.  We enjoy it and take pride in it!

Our pro bono work

For example, we have all been affected one way or another by the pandemic, some more than others. Many people lost their jobs and could not afford to pay bills, mortgages, rent, etc.

Brian Betley, Esq., recently represented two clients in credit card collections cases, working to help clients who were in serious credit card debt with high interest rates get on affordable payment plans and reduce the amount they owe to these large, billion dollar credit card companies.  Like our Workers’ Compensation practice, we never back down from large corporations. The clients were elated with the results with a feeling that a huge weight was lifted off their shoulders.
